Especially Enriched
This past winter, YOUR children have been enriched with mathematics, chess, and science. The 24 Math Challenge was headed up by YOUR’s own Tahir Madyun. He was once a student here, graduated from Morehouse College, and has returned to give YOUR’s present students a lesson in mathematics. 24 Math Challenge tasks the students with quickly equating four numbers to the sum of 24. Trust me, it’s not as easy as adding them all together. Sometimes you must subtract, multiply, or even divide to get to 24. The students remarkably accepted the challenge. They solved problems that stumped even the sharpest of our staff. The children enjoyed the challenge so much that we’ve incorporated a few problems into our daily warm-ups.
24 Math Challenge isn’t the only subject in which the students have been enriched. We also welcomed Vaughn Stanley into our fold, who refreshed the students in chess. Some of you may remember that last year Ms. Eva and her husband Mr. Marcus gave the children an introduction into the world of competitive chess. Well, the children were so receptive that Mrs. Madyun decided to give them a review course. Little did she know the children weren’t looking for a review any longer, they were eager to dive back in where they had left off. They challenged themselves with more advanced strategies and techniques. Luckily, Mr. Stanley came prepared. Soon after the program was under way he was excited about how advanced the students were, and how he had not expected such young and learned players.
Not to be forgotten, Ms. Jael Bailey, our expert scientist, did a marvelous job engaging the children with natural sciences. She will also be heading up our Lego Robotics program during the spring.
Many Thanks
We would like to thank all of the parents who came out for our Black History performance. The students worked very hard on the program and we hope it showed. We look forward to having more events like this one, and we hope that you all will continue to show such strong support.
Welcome Back Mr. Christian
We are very excited to welcome back Mr. Christian to YOUR. He left as a Lead Counselor and has returned to take the position as Site Coordinator for the center and West Elementary. When asked how he felt to be back, he responded:
“I feel like I’m returning home. There are so many caring individuals on the staff and the children here have had a remarkable influence on my life. It’s as if I am a plant and YOUR is my fertilizer.”
Mr. Christian hopes to finish the school year on a high note and have an adventure filled summer camp.
Farewell Ms. Stacy
We here at YOUR are sorry to have to announce that Ms. Stacy has moved on in her career path and has left our community center. She was so good at keeping our organization running smoothly and she will surely be missed. We all wish her good luck and great fortune.
